Alexander Baege, often referred to as A.Baege, was born on July 24, 1927
in Merseburg Germany. He began his work which consisted of
photojournalism, portraiture and commercial photography after WWII and
ran a successful studio in Wiesbaden. Sometime during the 1950s, he
decided to participate in the Naturist Movement (see the
Gerhard Riebicke
page for more information). Alexander Baege photographed extensively at
Montalivet, a famous resort in France. Alexander Baege's photography was
published in European 1960s nudist publications such as "Gymnos",
"Helios" and "The Naturist". He published a few books on nude
photography. He enjoyed traveling to the U.S. and moved there sometime
during the 1970s. According to BFI an internet film database, in 1958
Alexander Baege made a travelogue on America which included a bathing
scene. Alexander Baege tried getting work in Hollywood and reportedly
was not successful and never worked professionally again. Alexander
Baege's body of work remains at cult level status. He died on May 12,
1999 in Los Angeles where he spent the last 20 years of his life.
Irma (Irmgard) Ley is the name of the model used at the begining of this
section. She was Alexander Baege's girlfriend for many years and
traveled extensively with him on many of his photographic excursions.
They spit-up sometime during the 1970s. Irma's "Sphinx in the Sand"
photographs are particularly charming.
050 is from a source believed not to be from Alexander Baege. The model
is also featured in other scans. She probably was professional figure
model that was hired by Alexander Baege.
